Pipika Asso, Dani woman from Baliem Valley, West Papua, Indonesia.
Pipika Asso lives in the highlands of West Papua, Indonesia. She belongs to the Dani tribe. Her son, who could speak Indonesian, thinks she is close to 50 years old. When she was a girl, her elder brother died from illness. As a sign of bereavement, she got four fingers cut. The tradition is less and less common these days but his son sees no problem in this practice as the wounds take “only” three months to heal.
