indonesianhistory:

Royal picture of the day - Sultan Hamengkubuwana VI of Yogyakarta, circa 1870, taken by Isidore van Kinsbergen, who was known as a Dutch-Flemish engraver who took first archaeological and cultural photographs of Java during his first visit to the colony in 1851.
Hamengkubuwana VI (born in 1821 as Gusti Raden Mas Mustojo) ruled Yogyakarta from 1855 to 1877, titled Sinuhun Mangkubumi. He was said to be the twelfth child of Hamengkubuwana IV and his consort Gusti Kanjeng Ratu Kencono.
He was enthroned following his brother, Hamengkubuwana V’s unexpected death. His era saw the Javanese earthquake which caused destruction of a huge part of the royal palace (the keraton).
At first it was said that he disliked his brother’s policy, summed up as ‘passive war’ by conducting a harmonious relation with the colonial government. However after his enthronement he pursued a friendlier relationship with the colonial government the way his brother did.
Eventually the relation between Yogyakarta and the colonial government was strained because the Sultan maintained good connections with neighboring kingdoms and princely states regarded as enemies to the colonial government—-including with the Brunei Sultanate whose princess he eventually married.
