Discover Bengkulu.

Bengkulu was declared one of Republic of Indonesia provinces on September 12, 1967, or 22 years after the nation independence in 1945. Yet, history of Bengkulu had begun long ago, back to the centuries of ancient kingdoms.

Bengkulu was once called Sungai Serut. The region’s harbors were busy ones for spices trading and its people had close trade relationship to Majapahit Kingdom, a glorious Javanese kingdom at that time. Several kingdoms alternately took over area of modern Bengkulu, from Hindu Kingdoms to Islamic Sultanates, until in 16th century, colonialism started to mark up whole nation’s history.

Throughout this period of colonialism, Bengkulu gave its own role for the nation. Well-known Fort Marlborough in downtown Bengkulu, built by England Government, was also used when Dutch and Japan dominated Indonesia. Soekarno had been exiled here for years while Enggano Island in western off shore the province became destination for Romusha’s workers.
