Pipika Asso, Dani woman from Baliem Valley, West Papua, Indonesia.
Pipika Asso lives in the highlands of West Papua, Indonesia. She belongs to the Dani tribe. Her son, who could speak Indonesian, thinks she is close to 50 years old. When she was a girl, her elder brother died from illness. As a sign of bereavement, she got four fingers cut. The tradition is less and less common these days but his son sees no problem in this practice as the wounds take “only” three months to heal.

Women wearing ‘noken’ on their head in a funeral, Baliem Valley, Papua, Indonesia.
Made of fiber from the inner bark of a type of mulberry tree they are finger woven net bags, noken are used to carry just about everything: vegetables, books or even kids and piglets together. When not in use as a bag they are worn on the head like a snood.
By 2011, noken has been nominated as Unesco’s Urgent Safegurading of Intangible Heritage for concerns that this hand made bag is soon to be extinct.
