Aceh, the furthest west province of Republic of Indonesia, was officially recognized as part of the nation on December 7, 1956. Ever since until 2001 the province held a Special Region title over historical factor of Islam and its deep influence toward the nation’s independence. The nature of special region remains when the province changes its name into Nangroe Aceh Darussalam until 2009 and then Aceh, up to now.
Aceh is known nationwide as Serambi Mekkah (Mecca’s forecourt), refers to the region’s role as the Islam entry gate from India and Middle East further for its viscosity of Islamic culture in people’s daily life. The province even adopts the Islamic Sharia over Muslims, differentiates it from any other provinces in Indonesia.
